Starting physical therapy can bring up questions about what will happen and how to prepare. Your first appointment is designed to help your therapist understand your concerns and make a plan together.
A conversation about your health and goals
Your therapist will ask about your symptoms, medical history, daily activities, and what you hope to accomplish. Sharing what makes symptoms better or worse can help guide the evaluation.
Bring a list of questions or activities you would like to return to. Your goals help keep care focused on what matters to you.
A movement assessment
Depending on your needs, the evaluation may include observing movement and checking mobility, strength, balance, or other relevant abilities. Let your therapist know if anything feels uncomfortable during the assessment.
You can expect your therapist to explain what they are checking and why. You are always welcome to ask for clarification or a pause.
Your first care plan
After the evaluation, your therapist will discuss the findings and recommend next steps. This may include guided exercises, education, and a plan for future visits, tailored to your needs and progress.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move. If you have insurance or referral questions, contact the clinic before your appointment so the team can help you prepare.
